    also go to either a 2 or 4 year program & take a statewide
    examination to earn their degrees.

    Their responsibilities & accountability are quite different from those of the average Walmart employee.  Nurses can
    be sued for medical malpractice.  

    As a night shift RN for 25 years, I felt I earned every penny of my salary over the years.

      So have cops, firefighters and teachers. No one is saying you are overpaid. Just saying that you can't compare a WalMart worker's situation to a nurse's, unless you wanted to argue that you're horribly exploited and mistreated.

        If it wasn't 3:45 am. No, haven't worked for going on two years. As far as pay, it's decidedly under. Nurses jobs are analogous in skills, education, responsibility, etc. to pharmacists and you can easily guess the salary is way lower.  It's established as one of the most stressful jobs due to the discrepancy in responsibility and authority.

        One of my problems with discussions that bring up teachers, firefighters, paramedics and police, is that they often leave out nurses - probably because most are not public employees. There are a lot of other ways we are forgotten. Our benefits often aren't as good as the others.  Some of us get a little sensitive about it all.

          As someone with 2 Masters degrees and a PhD whose field has been overtaken by insourced and offshored labor that is firing top candidates in favor of cheap labor and driving wages into the pit (no seriously--the PIT), I understand what it is to be sensitive. We also put our kid through 5 years of large-and-small-animal veterinary school (imagine what that cost) only to watch her get massively exploited by a for-profit veterinary outfit that pays her less than a starting kindergarten teacher. Things are tough all over, and you're right, public employees' jobs are protected in ways that private ones aren't.

          But this diary was about WalMart employees and their unique issues, I don't think it was appropriate to dismiss their concerns by comparing systemic wage theft to what is mostly a negotiated 12-hr day 3 days a week (yes, there are exceptions, but those aren't yet so systemic) .
