    but SD isn't very socially conservative, seeing as how its gay marriage ban passed only narrowly in 2006. can't imagine ND is very different, and I can't imagine gay marriage will be that unpopular come 2018.

      The state itself is fairly conservative, but the people that run the state are VERY conservative.

        South Dakota rejected strict abortion laws at the ballot by a wide margin back in 2006, and South Dakota is, I've heard, the more evangelical of the two states. I doubt these measures would pass muster before the actual electorate. It's just a case where the Republican establishment is far to the right of the actual voters.
