  •  Why is it necessary to differentiate (7+ / 0-)

between "Christian" & "Evangelical Christian"? Is your piece of the Body of Christ somehow superior to the rest of it? Or we do just hyphenate ourselves: Evangelical-Methodist-Christian as different from just plain old Methodist or generic Evangelical? Can a Roman Catholic be an evangelical? If not, why not?  What do we do about the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America? Ask them to drop the Evangelical because they aren't really "Evangelical."? These questions are all rhetorical.

    •  Yes You Hyphenate Because the Evangelicals (17+ / 0-)

have been running an aggressive program for decades of infiltrating churches of liberal protestants and breaking them up to take over the property. Two of my mother's churches in different parts of the country were thus attacked, one fell, one is teetering after the evangelicals were repulsed.

      •  An Article Reporting on a National Conference of (7+ / 0-)

evangelicals to decide how to take on liberal protestantism ran in Newsweek on June 12 1967, the week before The Summer of Love. I have this issue because its cover features Sir Francis Chichester who'd recently circumnavigated the world single-handed in a sailboat, a rare feat at that time, and I'm a sailor.

why this particular diarist feels a need to self-identify as an Evangelical. Taking on liberal protestantism wasn't so difficult once the right got rolling in the 70's. They were probably surprised how easy it was.

...progressive flight.  This is very much the same phenomenon as white flight from the cities in the 60s and 70s.  Does responsibility for the impoverishment of the inner city neighborhoods lie, in part, on the shoulders of the folks who fled to get away from alll those scary black people?  Does responsibility for the impoverishment of the Liberal Protestant churches lie, in part, on the shoulders of the progressives who fled to get away from all those scary discipleship demands?
