  •  For some asexuals, they wouldn't be sham. (5+ / 0-)

But unfortunately, in many places the state wouldn't see it that way unless they have sex at least once, no matter how deep the feelings involved and no matter if all the other things married couples do together or for each other were present. Or the lack thereof would be seen as instant grounds for annulment.

The consummation requirement has been one of the religious arguments against marriage equality in England, if I remember what I read correctly - some officials in the church worried that they might have to marry couples who couldn't have PIV sex by definition and therefore couldn't have it count as a legitimate church marriage by traditional standards no matter what else they did together.

    •  I'm sure I'm naive, but (6+ / 0-)

do governments actually have mechanisms in place to verify that married people are having sex, or some kind of check system that makes people prove they've done it at least once?  I get that marriage is a contract between two people and the society, or the state--what I don't get is the notion that the state is going to verify that particular detail.

    •  That would mean at least one couple (3+ / 0-)

I know could not be happily married. He's an incomplete quad. His paralysis is very high so he has gross motor hand and arm function, which can be used with adaptive equipment to do somewhat more fine motor actions. Thanks to all the stuff that can be done with verbal commands, he does a lot more now than he used to be able to.

Accident was years before they met and married. The wedding photos, just as prominent as other homes, are beautiful.
