    -   So they can get a tax break for the kid they were already expecting because it's just good financial planning to do that.

     -  So they won't be disowned.

     -  Because Daddy's will requires it.

     -  For the pension and/or Social Security benefits.

     -  So nobody gets shot.

     -  To avoid probate.

     -  For the health benefits.

    With respect to the latter, my college girlfriend and her husband told me that they married so that he could be put on her insurance plan. They were living together anyway so it's not as though they were perpetrating fraud but the fact is it was matter of prudence.

    Nobody NEEDS to be married to prove their love.

    In the words of Joni Mitchell...

    We don't need a piece of paper from the city hall
