    to host dinners, speak at government friendlies, and express concern over their issues. 2 months of learning Japanese customs - and understanding that they never say no even when they mean no - is all she'll need.

    Let's not pretend that this job requires serious negotiation skills or the ability to coordinate DC's response to nuclear reactor meltdowns. Its a retirement gig for government celebs who have contributed to the party cause.

      I guess I have always been annoyed when ambassadors are chosen when they don't have a historical connection with the country or don't speak the language.

      To wit, Howard Leach who was named by Dubya to the plum ambassadorship of France.  His qualifications?  He gave $400,000 to Bush's campaign. He owned several agricultural companies and didn't speak a word of French.   Honteux!
