In both the pre- and post-Dien Bien Phu era, when it came to pushing for deeper and broader American involvement in the Vietnamese civil war, no one was more influential in making that happen than "Asia expert" Mike Mansfield.

This was at a time when there were plenty of French and American experts on Vietnam who were predicting that Ho Chi Minh was no threat to the U.S. and that an American war there would be a disaster for the Americans just as it was for the French.  Asia specialist Mansfield, a liberal, said it was a good idea, so of course it was.

Three million Vietnamese were killed as a result.

Like the neo-con proponents of the Iraq war, Mansfield should never again have been taken seriously on Asian policy after his abysmal performance urging Eisenhower and Kennedy -- against the Kennedy's better instincts -- to go deeper into Vietnam.

Vietman was an even bigger foreign policy disaster for the U.S. than the Iraq war.

Still, Mansfield was a relatively decent ambassador to Japan.

This aggression will not stand, man.
