    Why not do a vote by acclamation?  It would allow the wishy washy to enact legislation supported by 80%-90% of the public without any record of a roll call vote.  So Senator X or Representative Y could still tell constituents, "yes, the measure was passed, but I didn't vote for it" and no one would be able to dispute the claim.  It is an easy solution to actually serving the people while still serving their own self-interests.  

    As a general rule, I think our elected representatives should have the courage to have all their votes on the record, but if this is the only way to get something done, then it is preferable to have one off-the-record vote.
