He wasn't trying to be offensive.

You know, same was true for my grandfather years ago. My cousin took him to the DMV to renew his license. As they got up to the line, grandpa said "oh, we can just go up, we don't have to wait for these people" as it was mostly black and Hispanic people in line.

He wasn't trying to be offensive, it was just what he knew.  He was a good man in so many ways, but just saw some people as different.

Same is true for Young - he just sees Hispanics as different.  The problem is, that's not what this country is supposed to be about.

Your grandpa may or may not have been trying to be offensive. But he was a racist and so is Young.

own insensitivity. It is the 21st century; it's not ok to talk like that ever. White men are not superior. People need to deal with that particular reality.

      Wrong answer.

My point is, his comments go way beyond just being offensive.

When Rush Limbaugh says Sandra Fluke is a slut, or calls women "FemiNazis" or any such stupidity, that's offensive. He's trying to be offensive, it's a deliberate attempt to rile people up. In most cases, he even knows what he is saying is wrong and is offensive.

When Young made his comment, I believe him - he's not trying to be offensive. Same as Todd Akin or Richard Mourdock - none of what they said was to get their supporters all worked up, it was genuinely what they believed, how they think.

Young is a dinosaur who actually believes that "wetback" is an okay way to label and define migrant workers. He doesn't even know that it's wrong and offensive. The man has no place in public office and has light years to go in terms of understanding and treating his fellow human being with respect.
