I sit on the Town of Boone's Water Committee. We've been looking to build a state of the art intake system now for years, held a referendum on the issue (75% support), and now we have decided to hold for at least the time being (that's after having already bought the land for the intake and having most of the permits in hand). At our meeting last week, in light of all the legislative action against towns' rights to continue to own the public utilities they BOUGHT AND PAID FOR has led us to come back in a month to begin to decide whether we want to proceed based on research and input from the town attorney. We have discussed putting on this November's ballot the question to the people.

    •  This is a great example of why it is important ... (4+ / 0-)

... that the citizens of this state need to be aware of this issue and need to respond.  In my somewhat biased view, the Republicans are doing this simply because they can.  But the real consequences of such legislation are examples like yours.  There is no need being served by their action against Asheville; but the consequences of such action hurt communities like Boone and others across the state as well.  It is, in my view, reckless.

Thanks for your great example of the consequences of this bill.
