  •  the "genius" of George W Bush (16+ / 0-)

was that he managed to keep a lid on this kind of thing for 8 years. Seriously, it was the one and only real achievement of the guy's entire life. Look how lost they are without him.

The next leader of the party will be the guy that can bring the godbotherers and the billionaires under the same tent (or whomever can get the closest to that, anyway).

This post is dedicated to myself, without whom, I'd be somebody else. Though I'd still be an asshole. My Music: []

That's why they got rolled in 2006.

    •  That's because he was a god-bothering plutocratic (8+ / 0-)

yokel himself, or at least he played one on the political stage.  McCain neither could nor would play either the god-bothering or yokel part and trying to farm that out to Princess Dumbass of the Northwoods backfired when the whistle was too loud from the wind traversing her head from one ear to the other.  Romney obviously was ABOVE the yokel role, his particular form of god-bothering was too outré for even the fundies, and he didn't dare try to pull off a successful Palin coup.

So the question is whether the R's have another relatively smart (I doubt bribery got The Shrub through his Harvard MBA), god-bothering plutocrat who can play a yokel well when it suits his political purposes.  Rick Perry auditioned for the part in 2012, but his problem was that he really WAS a yokel -- and not a very bright one at that.

Christie?  Nah -- too much of a non-god-bothering brash Northeasterner for the Southern shitkickers

Rubio?  Does he really seem ready for prime time yet?  And are the shit-kickers really going to vote for another BROWN guy?

Jindal?  Ditto.  And are the shit-kickers really going to vote for another BROWN guy?

Aqua-Buddha?  How much can he distance himself from Crazy Uncle Liberty without losing his base of his father's true believers?

Maybe it's just wishful thinking, but I don't see any likely Republican candidates out there with the same combination of plutocratic identification (Reagan as a shill and Bush as a scion), thespian bonhomie, and schlock religiosity and patriotism that worked so well for Reagan and Bush.  Without the ability to pull off the latter two tricks, all the other possible candidates seem to come across too clearly as what they really are -- boot-licking servants of the plutocracy and self-aggrandizing, hyperambitious dicks.

The christianists kept saying in 2000 that GWB was one of us. No he wasn't. It was bullshit. Rove said so. Compassionate conservatism was a marketing slogan. Bush was always aligned with the Wall Street wing of the party. Instead of ending abortion he spend his political capital on trying to privatize Social Security and selling our ports to Dubai.
