from a famous overlook. Bit of a drive to get to.

your photo from the South Rim? Maybe even the South Bass trailhead, since you gave us all a clue about the 'bit of drive to get to' Azazello. Come on! We're a family here. . .and I've been cruising this iconic canyon for many years. I know the spot. Let's let you reveal the locale. There's also a brief stretch of level 2 or 3 rapids in the foreground, and I'm thinking the 'mineral canyon' sectors west of the Bouche-Hermit trails region???

      •  It's Toroweap, but you knew that, of course. (1+ / 0-)

We camped there two nights and you know what ? We were the only Merkans there. There was a carload of Germans and a couple from Spain, and us.

how many, if any, tries did you blow on that long excursion to Toroweap? And did you hike down the trail, which is arguably the Grand Canyon's most arduous day-hike tour to the famous (infamous?) rapids? I want to admit to you and all the rest of the Dkos community, Azazello, I screwed up by not wearing gloves on that lava-lined route to the river. Going down was also the worst part of the trip. Climbing, however, was/is always easier. Serh Gut! at the German expression goes. I guess "bueno" is 'gud enuf' as the Spanish expression goes.

By the way, that difficult trial and trail to the Colorado from the trailhead, at Toroweap, is considered the most arduous trek in the Grand Canyon, because it is for day-use only. I also think it has to be the most difficult drive out to that point, even above and beyond the Bass trailhead on the South Rim.

but then, I am an experienced back road driver. We did not do the hike, just camped and got the shots. We did meet one unfortunate family who tried to do the whole drive from Jacob's Lake to Toroweap in one day and blew out the transfer case on their brand new Jeep. They never got to the overlook and had to drive all the way back to Kanab with the front wheels only.
