and one of my most testy points when I stand up for the most important aspect of life: the environment and keeping it healthy, sustainable. I know it's naive for me to even say this, but I can't understand the dunderheads doing all this damn drilling for the sake of so-called independence from foreign oil sources, when in fact we are digging our own graves by inflating our egos and creating such a huge cash cow the damn thing is bloated beyond all proportion and factual truth. Fracking and this damn tar sand nonsense is the main culprit and to think our president is now behind such impetus and that annoying "drill, baby drill!" nonsense. Grrrrrrrr. For me to say anything more is going to really ruin my day. But thanks for posting your additional comment, DWG. Miscreants, indeed! And without souls. Of that I am sure.

    •  The sad part (4+ / 0-)

The stupid shale oil and gas wells that they want have an absurdly rapid depletion rate, requiring rapid expansion of wells to maintain current levels. The only reason for doing it is short-term profit. There is no long-term security in constantly drilling 50,000 holes per year.

They also want uranium, copper, silver, and gold off federal lands because a quirk in the Mining Act of 1872 allowed these metals to be extracted without paying royalties. Look at the number of foreign mining companies with active claims on the periphery of the Grand Canyon for instance.

There is nothing resembling economic necessity, national security, or public interest in any of these activities.

      Be radical in your compassion.

meshes with my own info, DWG. I am seriously thinking, and if the DKos community so allows, shifting some of my diaries to my favorite diatribes concerning such issues. I do a lot of networking for a variety of pro environmental sources, such as N.R.D.C., Credo, and god knows there's now a mess of them that are just as engaging. Thing is: we really are losing ground, fast, given the spoils of companies as you just described and their method to madness. My question to the community when I post these diaries, again, if I get brazen enough to do it, is it's not enough to know this stuff, but more important to take action. I think this community can come up with a decent game plan and make a concerted to do just that. In short, I am sending a general query to everyone asking what he or she thinks, and how best to go about trying to plug the brains of these ruinous people who do their worst to be a quick profit in as short a time as possible. I mean, this is the only Mother Earth we'll ever get and look what we're doing to her! Look what this meaningful comment is saying in a huge way? 50K wells a year and God Bless America! while we Goddamn the environment.
