  •  Who will it be? Well it certainly won't be a (7+ / 0-)

senator from Georgia.  Chairwoman of the Georgia GOP, Sue Everhart, just came out with a statement against marriage equality, calling it a grab for a "free ride."  This has to be the most far-fetched reason I've heard so far:

“You may be as straight as an arrow, and you may have a friend that is as straight as an arrow. Say you had a great job with the government where you had this wonderful health plan. I mean, what would prohibit you from saying that you’re gay, and y’all get married and still live as separate, but you get all the benefits? I just see so much abuse in this it’s unreal. I believe a husband and a wife should be a man and a woman, the benefits should be for a man and a woman. There is no way that this is about equality. To me, it’s all about a free ride.”

If the person with the health plan was female, and the friend who needed it was male, what would stop that sort of relationship now? Plenty of people live separate (often due to job reasons), and they're still just as married as folks who are fighting over the bathroom every morning (the extra half-bathroom we added made a huge difference when I was growing up).

Of course, the ultimate solution to her dilemma is to institute single-payer full coverage health care, so that no one is getting married solely because they need health insurance...but that's another subject for another diary.

different from now. aka "how many male and female platonic friends marry to get healthcare, tax, and other benefits", currently.

It is exactly the same as two women or two male friends doing that When LGBT people gain the right to marry.

it wouldn't be any different anyway.  Government employees will be buying insurance from exchanges just like non-government employees.  The woman is a loon.  And the fact that she's the Chairwoman of the state GOP makes me wonder about the sanity of the entire cast of state GOP members.
