    how different history would be if the Republican party had not welcomed those racist Dixiecrats with open arms.

    The Dixiecrats would have been isolated. They'd have been weak and powerless. Maybe we'd have two rational political parties today instead of one that's mortgaged its soul for the sake of keeping its bigoted base happy.

      Country Club Republicans were not already just as racist, bigoted, anti-Semitic, etc. Their contribution was to teach the South how to hide it in Dog Whistles. As Dick Gregory put it

      Down South they don't mind how close you get, 'long as you don't get too big.

      Up North they don't mind how big you get, 'long as you don't get too close.
