    He was in a reserve cavalry unit when the war started. Horses weren't much needed in the Philippines, so they did jungle warfare training in Australia.

      He was a doctor in the 1st Evacuation Hospital, which helped set up hospital bases up the coast in Queensland and then went on to New Guinea.
