      If You go back to when the price per barrel was $30 - none of it was 'recoverable' - despite them knowing that it was there and recoverable if the price increased to the point of profitability

      the pipeline has been in the works for decades, and it has been shelved and put back 'on track' entirely due to economics of the oil market

        not costs.

        So yeah, in theory, new technologies could be developed.  If the price of crude oil were $500 /bbl or something like that.

        But seriously, if alternate energy has not become WAY cheaper in the 20 or 30 years before that happens the planet is totally fucked well beyond anything the tar sands may or may not contribute.
