  •  What did your dad think of the "Spider" episode... (0+ / 0-)

....(Apollo 9) of HBO's "From the Earth to the Moon"?

That's one of my favorite episodes from the series.

When was it on? My dad passed away in 1996. And my folks have always tended to steer clear of premium cable channels. As for me, I never really seem to have time to watch television.

For the most part Dad hated his career at Grumman (he was stuck there because he became an engineer at a time when a degree wasn't essential and was never able to successfully pursue a BA or BS) but he was very, very proud of having been involved with the Lunar Lander. To top it off, the lander was in development when I was in high school. There was a father/son tour (not many women in tech roles at Grumman back then) of the production facility which of which I naturally was completely in awe.

After Tom Hanks and Ron Howard completed "Apollo 13", they went on to make a 12 part mini-series for HBO: "From The Earth to the Moon" (1998). It is available on DVD and I think you can also stream it from Netflix.

If you enjoyed the movie "Apollo 13", then you will also enjoy this mini-series. From a science and engineering viewpoint, episodes #5 "Spider" (Apollo 9) and #10 "Galileo Was Right"(Apollo 15)  are outstanding.  For pure enjoyment, episode #7 "That's All There Is" (Apollo 12) was one of the most enjoyable shows I have ever seen.
