    And you seem to have gone beyond what you learned from your family. It is not necessary to continue the cycle but it takes courage and thinking to overcome it.

    My childhood was nowhere near as bad as yours but it was crazy ... my father was abusive and my mother was clinically depressed. Whenever the crazy or the violence escalated, I vowed to myself that I would not treat my children or my spouse like that ... and this was when I was as young as 6-7. I started reading psychology and child rearing books by the time I was 15 or so because I wanted to be different.  Sometimes, my first reaction to a problem or situation is to behave like my nutso parents, but I have learned to act instead of react.

    You have found your own way to deal with the crazies, but they do stay with us, don't they.

    Thank you for sharing this ... I hope that it was  cathartic for you because it was helpful to me to remember where I started and how I came to be different.
