I wish we had treated the South like we treated Germany after WWII.  Reconstruction involved the Marshall Plan, but it also involved making sure that every single German understood the nature and extent of the crimes that they had committed, or had been committed in their name.

It was harsh, but as a result, almost no Germans hold on to some variant of "lost cause" mythology.  A harsh dose of reality, an occupation, combined with generous infrastructure reconstruction - that allowed Germany to once again become a civilized part of Europe.

France, UK, Poland... don't have to constantly push back on revisionist pro-Nazi WWII history the way we have to deal with Confederates in this country, over and over and over. Reconstruction failed, because the second the war was over, everyone seems to have wanted to forget it ever happened.

Neo-naziism is illegal in Germany, and holocaust denial is a crime in several countries.

"with rights come responsibilities." Wrong. Responsibilities continue to exist even if you abdicate your rights.
