  •  We had to fight slavery (0+ / 0-)

The European powers had abolished slavery a generation previously. International trade and the prosperity of the entire US was being impeded by the south's insistence on the outlaw practice of slavery. We could not have let it simmer for another 50 years. It had to be stopped.

In another 50 years, WWI might have been the invasion of the US by Europeans (a repeat of 1812) to halt the immoral and evil practices engaged in by the US as an outlaw state. And thanks to the damage done by internal strife, we probably would have lost.

With the Atlantic and Africa closed to us as a slave source by Europe, especially England, America would have turned to South America and the Pacific Rim for it's sources of slaves. This would have meant continual war with European colonial powers and the associated nation states. America would be a pariah state. Poor, backward, and a nightmare for whites and blacks alike as the inevitable totalitarian government needed to maintain the continual war footing sapped more and more from the nation and provided nothing good to the people.

The "dream" of a resurgent CSA is a nightmare for all serious and decent people.
