View Diary: Here's why it's a bad idea to say support for stricter gun control has collapsed (203 comments)

  •  I Guess Michael Moore Never Said This Either (3+ / 0-)

Which is all good fun if you're siting in a theater eating Junior Mints, but using it as the rational for laws doesn't fly.

Pushing this "guns=racism" theme here day after day is a great strategy if you're on the NRA's side.

what about it are you objecting to exactly?

what about it is factually wrong?

i missed the part where he said it was the only reason for guns.  but racism is clearly "A" reason for guns.  one of the big reasons.  do you dispute any of the factual assertions in that part of the film?

....."Racism = guns" was the only thing I got out of it

            •  racism-driven fear has been a key factor (0+ / 0-)

in some of the gun crazy actions of our country.

a key factor, certainly, even if you do not believe it is the only factor.

and the film did not say it as the only factor.

what is your alternative explanation, if you disagree with this one?

who are all these folk scared of?  and why?

My point, and the one I'm sticking with, is that Moore was entertaining, but in a deliberately obnoxious, bratty, and childish manner (not counting the cartoon format).  I could pull up any number of films that are similar, except for being racist or misogynist or fascist, because it's one note propaganda.  It was a straight up propaganda film with the usual tactics of utterly devaluing political opponents.

It actually seems like several people here saw that cartoon, and that it was the only thing they took away from the movie. If that's what actually happened, Moore set back gun control efforts.

          •  Shit Nell Says (0+ / 0-)

A lot of groups have their phrases that really only seem to have meaning in the group.

            Consider the Romney campaign
            "Roman columns! Teleprompter! Jimmy Carter!""

Most people have no idea what "Roman columns" mean, although I have a conservative friend who is still enraged by the phrase "Roman columns."  (Actually he's enraged by a lot of things, which is relevant, but off topic).

But, as Romney found out, it's possible to get a great emotional response in the little insulated "in group" but, to the world at large, end up sounding like "Nell."

when Obama accepted the Democratic nomination they built an outdoor stage for him and folks objected to the "roman columns"

                Doric?  Ionic?  Fuck it.

The point is that phot was from the2008 nomination and Romney was saying "Roman columns" in 2012.

                The problems were:
                1) Not that many got the reference in 2008
                2) By 2012 it was an unfunny reference Dennis Miller style
                3) Half the people that remembered had probably already died of old age.
                4) People that could still work themselves into a stage of rage over that are probably useless fuck-ups.

That's when I knew Romney was going to lose because it was clear his operation was a circle jerk of insiders who actually thought they were being clever and this was devastating putdown.

They really thought they crushing it, but it just a public demonstration how incredibly far they'd crammed their heads up their ass.
