    I took a defensive shotgun class before I ever fired my shotgun. I remember my instructor telling me that besides a shotgun, a pistol-caliber lever-action carbine was a good option. He recommended .45LC or .357 Magnum.

    Also, Vclib's right if you buy a shotgun: you want a shorter-barreled model meant for self-defense use, not one of the longer trap/skeet models. You can find used police 870s for a really good price if you look around.

      The tube magazine was considered too fragile for beating people over the head.

      And I think the main objection was that lever guns are  not modular in terms of being able to replace the bolt and firing spring.  

      replacing the firing spring of a lever action is probably not too bad for a gunsmith, but it's a real trick even with detailed instructions.
