When it's NK civilians, is what I'm saying.

At a border checkpoint, it is easy to tell where the North begins because there are no trees.

The people chop them down for firewood to keep warm and eat the softer roots. The lack of food and nutrition is so bad in North Korea that UNICEF estimates 28 percent of the children have stunted growth. One study found that on average North Koreans are a full two inches shorter than South Koreans.

Rare footage on Japanese television shows what are believed to be political prison camps where prisoners, men and women are kept on the verge of starvation, forced to do back-breaking labor.

That’s how wide the arrest net is potentially cast when North Korea’s police state decides a person is politically deviant. That person, along with up to three generations of his or her family — also judged guilty, merely by association — are thrown into one of the country’s horrific prison camps.

Siblings, parents, children, even grandchildren can be tossed into nightmarish conditions in a far northern camp, where they’re subjected to beatings, sexual assaults, starvation diets and forced labour, simply because they’ve the bad luck of being related to the accused.

How is political deviance defined? Straying from what the state wants you to do. In other words, almost anyway authorities decide.

For example, let’s say you’re starving. You leave your village to search for food. Well, you’ve just disrespected North Korea’s revered leader by showing insufficient trust he’ll provide for his people. That’s political deviance.

      •  I'm inclined to agree. The government doesn't. (0+ / 0-)

But what will the people themselves think? They'll likely just buy into whatever lies the government tells them, I guess.
