The U.S. variety is different and springs out of a different base.
I think it would be good to confront that our nation and the several states are all corporations, artificial bodies designed to minimize individual liability for decisions and mistakes. The U.S. Constitution tries to address that by limiting the powers of the agents of the state up front. Regardless of whether or not that is totally effective, the states don't set the same conditions for private corporations. Corporate charters could be abrogated or dissolved in the event the organization does not serve a public purpose and violating fraud statutes is certainly evidence of that.

We organize governments to deliver services and prevent abuse.

excellent, well thought out book by the dean of American Political Philosophers, Sheldon Wolin.

title of his book, published in 2008 "Democracy Inc.: Managed Democracy and the Specter of Inverted Totalitarianism"

in normal totalitarianism, the state controls everything. For example, the media is for state propaganda

in our case, the media know what to do to support politicans and the 1%

in the first case everyone knows that the state lies

in our case, we have a managed democracy which keeps the old words in circulation but they don't mean anything anymore

for example, freedom of assembly is moot when the government spies and arrests 90 reporters in OWS

the media say that OWS does not have a clear agenda, etc., but OWS is going after the power of the corporations and the banksters

the book is not an easy read, but it provides a historical and intellectual treatment of our government

back when the book was published he had to walk on eggshells when using the "T" word in the title. Now that the 1% have won, the "T" word with the modifier of inverted T fits the bill

It's not a tough read per se, but it is the kind of book that you take a couple of pages an evening but not because it's hard to read but because the ideas and thoughts that it provokes AS you read makes a lot of your attention go back into your brain to analyze and digest the ideas that you just read - I like that in a book. I didn't care for the phrase "imaginary" that Wolin has sprinkled through it - I wish he had come up with a more easier phrase to glide through and not come to a stop.
