They'll either evolve and someday be competitive again, or they'll suffer the fate of the dinosaurs (and whigs).
Don't forget the vast rightwing propaganda machine. All they need is the right pseudo-issue to grow their base. I'm hoping Obama's willingness to screw with Social Security will not be that issue come election time.

I like to cheer on the pendulum's current leftward swing with the rest of us, but that swing has just begun. We have momentum on marriage equality, but we really don't have what can be called momentum across the board yet.

The Right can still sway fence-sitters and the under- or badly-informed. Never underestimate the gullibility of the mass of the voting public and the percentage of people who will go along with anything that is crass or mean.

Remember: it was only a couple of heartbeats ago, historically speaking, that the conservatives were touting that Liberalism is dead. It is a very fresh memory. Let us not be equally abused of the notion of their frailty and terminal condition. They aren't licked yet.

Peace is not merely a distant goal that we seek, but a means by which we arrive at that goal. - Martin Luther King, Jr.
