but it is part of the liberal make-up that we disagree and debate incessantly among ourselves. It is part of the liberal aversion to oversimplification and our love of intellectualism.
So to the dedicated conservative and the dim among the uncommited, uninformed "other", we appear to be in chaos or not united in purpose. Our way is the way Democracy is meant to be, the way we're supposed to function in government. Debate and consensus. Conservatives will have no truck with that.

So if he can point to the appearance of disagreement and say we are divided and suggest we stifle dissent (there they go again, accusing us of what they do), they may be able to siphon from our fringe.

No, we shouldn't change. As James Carville said in the title of his book, "We're Right and They're Wrong".
Yes, we have our work cut out for us. Intellectual laziness is epidemic in our nation today. Short attention span. Instant gratification. The lure of easy answers to complex problems. We have to work to ensure we're understood, even while we wrangle with one another.

Peace is not merely a distant goal that we seek, but a means by which we arrive at that goal. - Martin Luther King, Jr.
