those who would use a weapon that leaves the hand are the cowards. It takes no courage to pull a trigger or push a button. That is the ultimate manifestation of cowardice.

Ignorance is bliss only for the ignorant. The rest of us must suffer the consequences.

    •  Agreed. It is a contentious issue (7+ / 0-)

I wanted to expand that paragraph and probably will at another time. I'm fairly certain that if I had left my original words I'd have been frog-marched out the door.

Thank you for your kind words and wisdom, paradise50.

Is a wonderful science fiction book by M.A. Foster.  It deals with a mutated race of superhumans, our successors, and their interaction with ordinary humans.  I highly recommend it to anyone interested in that sort of thing.

But the reason it is relevant:  They have a belief strong enough to constitute a taboo, that one cannot use a weapon that leaves the hand -- even a rock.  It is so fundamental to their culture that it might as well be hard-wired.  And, I might add, it would be a very good rule for all of us to emulate.

I'm well aware of the trite arguments that someone determined to kill can do it with a knife or club or screwdriver.  Maybe so, but they couldn't have accidentally killed Danielle, and they couldn't have killed 20 children in an elementary school.

Beautiful diary, by the way -- I am so sorry for your loss.

I like the genre, so did Danielle.

        This is most intriguing:

They have a belief strong enough to constitute a taboo, that one cannot use a weapon that leaves the hand -- even a rock.  It is so fundamental to their culture that it might as well be hard-wired.
Effecting a cultural change like that here is something I would give my life to achieve.

Thank you for bringing it to our attention and for your kind words.
