    My understanding is that the gull that saved the Utau settlers  by devouring the locusts that were destroying their crops is the California Gull, Larus californicus.
    I called them seagulls for so many years before I got into birding that I still forget from time to time.  Some say that it's OK to refer to the general class of bird as seagulls just as we use a common name rather than the scientific latin form.  We get Ring Bill Gulls on the WA coast and Puget Sound in the winter and California Gulls in the summer.
