many STEM fields haven't been fair to women.  But some of these policies that exploit foreign workers make it far worse.  I find it interesting to see people accusing those of us who live in some measure in immigrant communities/families as having anti-immigrant bias.  While at the same time they're overlooking the bias of these policies against African Americans and American women.

    Here's an interesting read:

Panetta, who also served as director of the IEEE's Women in Engineering Committee, was especially critical of the H-1B visa overall, and said it was being used to replace American workers with lower wage workers.

But for women, the problem is especially acute, Panetta argued. "It's hard to get promoted when you don't get hired in the first place," said Panetta. She said the existence of a preferred pipeline for new hires has a "discouraging effects on independent American women considering the STEM [science, technology, engineering and math] fields."

Seriously, my daughter has a talent for something in STEM, but I don't think I would encourage her to go that route if the existing trends on policies like H1B and stapling don't reverse.
