I think the term "starving scientist" is going to supplant the term "starving artist" in the post-sequester years, to be honest.  I'm starting to use it regularly.

The arts have always depended on rich patrons, and when recessions hit, they are hit the first and hardest.  Everyone yells about taxes going to fund the arts in hard times - I hear it all the time in Ann Arbor.

Scientists are learning that they're luxuries, too.  I know it was an eye-opener to me.  But if there are no other jobs that'll take us...what then?

If the STEM fields are being hit so hard, logic suggests the arts would be hit WORSE.  And that's been my experience so far...an art field I tried to get into (Exhibit Development in museums) is utterly job-locked (and outsourced) and an educational game I developed is going nowhere for lack of marketing funds or channels to get them.

What exactly are they WORKING as?
