Has one dime been cut from Social Security benefits?
Do you feel just as badly for those 40 somethings who are going to have their benefits cut by 25% in 2035 if nothing is done?
It's not just the elderly we're talking about here.

    •  Yes, I do feel just as bad for them. (0+ / 0-)

When I talk about the elderly I am talking about us all, or at least those of us who happen to live long enough to become elderly. Unless we are unfortunate enough to die young, we all will become old. The chained CPI would affect those 40 somethings also.
You are being presented with a false choice--cut benefits a little now, or cut benefits a lot later. We don't have to cut benefits for anyone. We could raise the cap a little (not do away with it) or any number of other things. Read the daily Social Security diaries; they contain much detailed information that convinced me that we don't have to reduce payments to the elderly or disabled.
This problem was supposedly taken care of when we doubled our FICA tax back in 1983 or so. And it will disappear when the Baby Boom dies off, to be crude.

To keep our faces turned toward change, and behave as free spirits in the presence of fate--that is strength undefeatable. (Helen Keller)
