when I started menstruating, and that was 1970; I sometimes wonder if it was the stress from my father's death that set me off.

That's the current theory, anyway.  The skinnier, more athletic the girl, the more likely the delay of menarche.  Conversely, the heavier the girl, the greater the probability of early menarche.

According to Dr. Lawrence S. Neinstein of USC Keck School of Medicine:

Menarche is correlated to percent body fat with about 17% body fat required for menarche and 22% body fat reported to be required to maintain or restore menstruation. The average age of menarche dropped significantly from the 19 th century to the present time in Europe and North American.

that American girls are getting their first periods at an earlier age due to exposure to hormone residues in food.  At least one genetically engineered growth hormone is approved for use in cattle in the U.S.  Girls eat burgers and steaks that come from these cattle (or drink milk from cows that have been pushed artificially into milk-producing mode) and voila, periods at 10 or 11.  Exposure to certain household chemicals that mimic estrogen is also suspected of driving girls into early menstruation.
