  •  We need to support this while (9+ / 0-)

opposing the chaniend cpi proposal in the proposed budget.  Progressives need to do both.

This is good news and is the only real answer to the current stalemate.

    •  NO, sorry. THIS progressive doesn't "need" (11+ / 0-)

to bow and scrape to a party that is selling out my future and that of other older people.  These cuts to the Big Three are NOT necessary.   How many times do people have to be told?!  The President is throwing these cuts out there despite the fact that they are neither necessary or required.  Don't even attempt to TELL me what I "have" to do.  If you're willing to sell out older people because of Obama, that's your decision.  But don't tell anyone else that they "need" to do what you are advocating.

    •  Are you serious? Did you read the article? (9+ / 0-)

The White House intends to unseat a proven progressive Democrat and replace him with a Chicago Economics School (literally) corporate Democrat.

The first test case will be a guy named Ro Khanna, a 36-year-old Indian American technology lawyer with whom Obama’s staff is smitten. On Tuesday, Khanna announced his race for Congress in California’s 17th District.

In my piece, I lay out the many reasons this race is worth watching—among them, that Khanna is taking on incumbent Democratic Representative Mike Honda

Look at that again, Tom:  White House would like to defeat an incumbent Democrat!  That's what we need to support?  That won't do crap toward getting back the house, but will waste our money.

Honda has been a long-time supporter of immigration reform.  He is an ally on many progressive causes.

The White House wants him out.  The White House wants to cause an internecine battle in a usually safe Dem district.

What exactly does that do towards taking back the House?  Wasting our money in a safe Dem district, possibly demoralizing long-time supporters of Mike Honda?  What?

Here's who the White House supports: Ro Khann -

He received his B.A degree in economics with honors from the University of Chicago in 1998... He specializes in intellectual property law.[4]
Yeah, that's what we need.  More Chicago School Economics, just like cutting Social Security for our own good.  For those who don't know, Chicago School Economics means trickle-down. Supply side.  Reaganomics.  That's where it originated and is taught.

      We. Don't. Need. That.

I don't think so.  And I don't think we should be using the full resources of OFA to (phony claim) take back the house by unseating a GOOD Democratic congressman!

      •  The article is weak, (4+ / 0-)

these are various ex-staffers.  I know people from OFA working both sides of the MA-Sen primary.  Whatever.   OFA, itself, will spend more time on open seats or GOP holds.

Having graduated from the University of Chicago -- or taught at -- is not the same thing as embracing Chicago School economics.  Khanna got an undergraduate liberal arts degree, and the university is trying to be more intellectually diverse.  Chicago-school economics is not really Reaganomics, either.  Some similarities, but Reagan was closer to Keynes in a perverse way.

        Difficult, difficult, lemon difficult.

      •  I think the WH supports Honda. (5+ / 0-)

Obama's staff?  She hired Jeremy Bird.  He can sell his services to whomever he wants.  I think you are jumping to conclusions without evidence.

When you show me some evidence that OFA is working to unseat Honda, I'll listen.  I see no evidence.

        •  Obama supports Honda (5+ / 0-)

Honda’s staff issued a release early this morning announcing that President Obama has endorsed him for re-election in the 17th Congressional District, certainly one of the earliest endorsements of the 2014 congressional campaign cycle.

Congressman Mike Honda is the right leader for the 17th district. Together, we’ve worked hard these last four years to bring meaningful, positive change to our nation, but there is much more to do,” Obama said. “As we continue rebuilding our economy from the middle out, we know expanding educational opportunities is critical. Congressman Honda’s lifelong commitment to education and fierce advocacy for innovation and technology is exactly what this nation needs as we continue to move America forward.

“We need Congressman Mike Honda in the United States Congress, and I urge you to vote to keep him there.”

          •  Khanna challenges Honda using Obama operatives: (0+ / 0-)

I just find this disgusting: trying to defeat a progressive Democrat and wasting Democratic money in a safe Democratic seat:

Now he need only finish second behind Honda in June 2014 in order to go mano-a-mano with him in November. Then he can try to engage a wider range of voters: There's plenty of room to Honda's right, so a coalition of moderate Democrats, Republicans and nonpartisan voters could spell victory.
Khanna’s campaign team looks like Obama redux

General consultant Jeremy Bird — Obama 2012’s national field director

Campaign chairman Steve Spinner — Obama 2012 fundraising “bundler” and national finance committee member

Campaign manager Leah Cowan — Obama 2012 regional field director in North Carolina’s capital region

Organizing director Anthony Nagataini — Obama 2012’s field director in Charlotte, N.C.

Consultant Larry Grisolano — Obama’s paid-media director in 2008 and 2012, managing TV, radio, Internet, direct mail and print advertising

Consultant John Kupper — message/ad consultant to Obama’s 2004 Senate and 2008 presidential campaigns; still advises Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, Obama’s former White House chief-of-staff, since helping him win office in 2011

Consultant David Binder — prominent Democratic pollster and statistical analyst who did work for Obama’s 2008 campaign

Consultant Lynda Tran — was communications director for National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in the Obama administration; earlier, national press secretary of Organizing for America, a Democratic National Committee project that mobilizes Obama supporters on president’s legislative priorities.

Consultant Mark Beatty — Obama 2012’s deputy battleground states director

All that for a congressional seat?  Seriously?  That's some high powered support.

Khanna received $1.2 million in donations in 2012 without even saying who he'd run against... and he didn't run against anyone.  He still has a huge $1 million war chest to start going after labor and progressive hero Mike Honda.

I sent Honda a donation today. Every progressive should.

I can't walk and chew gum at the same time.

Seriously, make it abundantly clear to any candidate in 2014 that opposing entitlement reform on this magnitude is unacceptable. Kill the deal from the left.
