Have a higher potential to be violent.

Most individuals with schizophrenia are not violent; more typically, they are withdrawn and prefer to be left alone. Most violent crimes are not committed by persons with schizophrenia, and most persons with schizophrenia do not commit violent crimes.
Usually, if a schizophrenic gets violent, it's towards family members and not strangers.
    •  Sub-classifications (0+ / 0-)

The difference in our viewpoints may be related to the subclassification of schizophrenia.   There are sub-classifications of schizophrenia, including paranoid schizophrenia, those with negative symptoms and those with positive symptoms.  Certain of these sub groups are more likely to behave violently.

And, it may be a small percentage of those, who make the news.   But, MY, OH MY, how they do make the news.

The bottom line is that when families, psychiatrists, and police recognize a problem, there needs to be a process for how to address it.   We should not victimize all schizophrenics, but we should be assessing the patient, and responding when problems are reported.
