The gospels, genesis and other chunks.

I can't stand it.  Every page is like torture.

Worse than Marquez.  I am not sure I could finish the kjv even if I had a hundred years of solitude (which I could never finish and is probably on your list)

Btw and slightly o/t, I'm really struggling to get into my first Rushdie novel midnight's children for the same reasons...

    •  I don't see your whole clear point here, No Exit. (3+ / 0-)

      "Every page is like torture."

How is every page like torture? Does it feel like it's mangling the English language, does it drone on about boring trivialities, does it miss the point of its own stories?

I'm not sure whether you're pointing out artistic flaws in the work, or if instead you're just looking at things you haven't found a way into yet.

I tried reading 100 Years of Solitude, and twice it completely failed to grab me. It was talking about things that didn't seem important. Much later, I trued a third time, and found magic and heart in the story I hadn't seen before, and it became a joy to read. What had been obscure became clear and lucid.

I haven't got to Rushdie yet. But my brother said Midnight's Children was much easier to get into after he read Haroun and the Sea of Stories.

Admittedly I haven't tried to read the bible in well over a decade but the writing is often poor, concerned with trivialities and irrelevancies and lacking in cohesion.

Even the gospels I found to be a chore to read from the pov that they brought me no pleasure.  I didn't care about the characters, found the stories to be unbelievable and the writin was awful.

Point well taken about tastes and preferences changing such that certain books we once found awful become pleasures and vice versa.  I read a collection of Marquez's short stories and liked it very much.  Doubly surprising since I tend to dislike the short story format even for authors I like.
