  •  wow for the Jpn garden! does it have any water (10+ / 0-)

feature? it's so interesting to see an authentic HOME Japanese garden; you can see the big public gardens any time, but personal ones like this are not so easy to come by.

we've designed a large portion of our front yard with Japanese features and it works pretty well. I think the one we like best though is the tsukubai on the entry walkway, right outside the LR window. makes for lots of birdy action! (falling water, a vertical "cliff" face, a bathing/splashing basin, lots of moss all over, lots of overhead cover from predators due to being under the edge of our giant Jpn maple!)

wish I had pictures or knew how to put them up, 8-)

"real" work : a job where you wash your hands BEFORE you use the bathroom...

    •  Sounds fun (7+ / 0-)

to have the birds enjoying themselves right outside your livingroom window.  :-)

I have a well-situated conventional bird bath outside the kitchen window.  Thankfully it's also right next to the garden hose because sometimes in summer that water needs to be changed two or even three times a day because it gets used so much.

    •  It does not have a water feature now, but I think (8+ / 0-)

there may have been one in the past.  The area of lighter stone has the feel of a "water" element, and I'm thinking that it used to be one and either sprang a leak or maybe was given up during one of the droughts.  The front yard is done in a traditional style too.

When Alice lived here, she raked the stones in front and back regularly, so they had the nice patterns.  I miss her touch.
