A usually-decent Boston Globe columnist has decided to carry the water for Lynch's parade of whines. In a piece sharply criticized on Blue Mass Group, she essentially suggests that Lynch's adopted-a-week-before-he-announced-for-a-statewide-primary-in-Massachusetts position on abortion is equivalent to that held by John Kerry, who has what National Right to Life calls "an unrelenting anti-life record." Fer chrissakes, Lynch voted for Stupak just three years ago. His NARAL ratings have been in the 50s at best for years.

Markey, meanwhile, has a perfect rating year after year, and has supported choice since about 1980, but our columnist attempts to cast doubt on his bona fides:

Lynch personally opposes abortion. (So does Kerry, by the way.)

If elected to the Senate, Lynch said, he wouldn’t vote to make abortion illegal. He also pledged to oppose any Supreme Court nominee who might vote to overturn Roe v. Wade.

When Markey was first elected to Congress in 1976, he opposed abortion and once backed a proposed federal constitutional amendment to ban it. He began shifting his position in the 1980s, and is now prochoice. His explanation for the evolution is anything but smooth...

Republicans...think the American standard of living is a fine thing--so long as it doesn't spread to all the people. And they admire the Government of the United States so much that they would like to buy it. Harry S. Truman
