  •  We drove to Houston from Florida recently on I-10 (7+ / 0-)

the smell was so bad in places that I got headaches. I don't know how people that live near a refinery can handle it.

As a territory many years ago and can attest to the truth in that statement. Even driving thru now it burns the nose. I guess if you live there you get used to it?

      •  Never lived in Houston (thanks FSM) but (1+ / 0-)

often had short/long assignments there. Sometimes working (but usually 'living' dwtn or out west) in garden spots like Deer Park, Pasadena, Baytown, Clute/Freeport, Texas City, Galena Park (and everywhere else from College Station to Galveston).
You get used to the smell, like it or not, but the flareoffs were most impressive. Deer Park could light up like a sustained nuclear explosion was in progress (noisy too), since some of the flares are close to town, you can feel the heat too. Texas City is historically signifignant for the massive explosion in the late '40's that nearly destroyed the place. It took out a whole refinery and parts of others, incidentally to the source of it: a ship with hazardous cargo.

problem for those within a certain radius. Whatever regs are on those refineries are insufficient and/or unenforced.

This is a little amusing but production odors seriously can make life uncomfortable. Denver has had two manufacturing plants that driving near was uncomfortable. The Purina dog food one is still operating right near I 70, a little east of I 25.

The one that got to me is closed. Just north of I 70 near  Federal I had a home care patient whose visits were agony. He lived across one street from a Keebler plant that made cookies...
