  •  Great teaching moment (14+ / 0-)

That's great that you turned this into a nature lesson for LB.  You really handled that beautifully.

Similar thing happened in our wood duck house when we lived in NC.  The metal pole of the house was out in the water.  There was a snake baffle on the pole - an ingenious design that had worked elsewhere.  But there was a maple tree with limbs hanging over the house from which a snake could drop down that I didn't really notice until after the fact.

One day when I checked on the house after I knew the ducks had laid eggs, there was a black snake head looking out of the hole.  The snake had crawled in and swallowed all the eggs which were now bulges in his body. Because of those bulges, he was trapped and could not get back out of the hole until they digested. I opened up the house, grabbed the snake by its tail, and pulled it out.  I'm not sure why exactly I did that, because the wood ducks weren't going to try again in that house that year.  It was just a reaction.

    •  Thank you Milly! I hope I explained it to her (10+ / 0-)

alright. It's kind of hard to find the right words that a five year old mind can understand so I kept it as simple as possible and hope that I at least planted the seeds of something that will grow as she gets older. She really does love nature already and knows a surprising lot about it for a five year old. Her preschool teacher told me she is amazed at some of things she talks about at school. We're very proud of her.

That's a great story about your duck box and the aerial attack from the black snake. Thanks for sharing it.
