  •  Very nice diary (14+ / 0-)

both words and pictures.  Just got in town after four days away.

My observation of the day was quite unexpected.  As we were leaving Jekyll Island, in coastal Georgia, a flock of wood stork took flight.  Among the large black and white birds were several smaller ones that looked decidedly pink!  A closer look confirmed that there were 4-6 Roseate Spoonbills mixed in with the storks.

My impression had been that Spoonbills barely reached St. Augustine (about 100 miles south) as breeding birds but a check of the internet does reveal them as breeding in small numbers in southern coastal Georgia.

In general we were struck with the small numbers of wading birds compared to what we are used to at home and the small number of shorebirds on the beaches.  The area had been hit by heavy storms and perhaps the birds retreated elsewhere.

    •  Thanks mole, I got to see some roseate (9+ / 0-)

spoonbills a few years ago when we visited our daughter who lived in south Texas at the time. Very cool birds. Speaking of shore birds, I got a new bird yesterday, a solitary sandpiper. I got a pretty good picture of it or I'd have never been able to make the ID. It was in the strangest of places to find a shoreibird. We were getting a load of mulch from an area just outside the city limits of a nearby town. They have this huge pile of mulch that they make from all the yard debris that the citizens toss out every year, limbs, branches, grass cuttings, all that kind of stuff and they grind it up and give it away believe it or not so we take advantage of it. There is heavy equipment running all around the site, people everywhere, no water in sight, other than mud puddles and this is where we found our sandpiper. Very unlikely place to find one I'd think, and I'm just glad I had taken the camera with me.
