  •  NC isn't alone (9+ / 0-)

From a blog entry from last year (by a friend of mine) - when this was introduced in MN.

    2012
The Second Chance Act (similar to the NC Healthy Marriage Act) was being discussed in
    Minnesota
    Utah
    Texas
    Michigan
    Georgia
    Colorado
    Maryland

Not sure if it passed any of those places.

Something people need to watch for.
Thanks for bringing it up - you are raising awareness.

Marriage is important. We give significant benefits and privileges to married people. The decision to get married or divorced should not be taken lightly.

      My only conditions would be:

      1) If one spouse is convicted of abuse, divorce should be immediate.

      2) Any state that passes these laws must permit same-sex marriage, also. This is not negotiable.

      3) This form of "serious marriage" should be an option. Couples that want the currently popular, Britney Spears style, divorce-when-you-feel-like-it marriage should be able to still have it.

Kids do best when raised by two parents. Anything we can do to maybe, possibly, get couples to try harder to stay together is good.

Is this intrusive government? Is this a Nanny State? Is this limiting Freedom? Yes, yes, and yes.

If people don't like it, they can just live together. But if you want tax breaks and the other1,400 benefits that married people get, please show the community that you're in for the Long Haul.

      •  You are aware that it is actually impossible (4+ / 0-)

in many cases to arrest someone for many kinds of spousal abuse (simple assault, to be exact) unless the officer actually witnesses it firsthand.  No, the bruises on her face is not enough as the officer has to witness a punch themselves unless it rises to aggravated assault.

      •  The "community" needs to piss off. (0+ / 0-)

If people don't want to be married, the state shouldn't compel them to be. The only interest the "community" has is in making the divorce as effortless and fair as possible.
