I worked in govt. for thirty some years.  I have personally watched the negotiating process between political opposites.  In all that time, I have never seen a single politician offer up something in the negotiating process that he or she was not willing to part with.  With that in mind, consider the following:

    1)  Obama offered up the social safety net and Social Security, in particular, without being asked to do so by the Republicans.  Changes to Social Security do not appear in the Ryan budget.

    2)  This is not a mistake or some sort of 13 dimensional chess on Obama's part.  He has offered the social safety net on multiple occasions.

    3)  By putting Social Security on the negotiating table, Obama has already weakened it because it is now fair game in the eyes of the Republicans.

    4)  Social Security is a free standing insurance program that has absolutely nothing to do with the deficit or the budget.  For that reason alone, it should not even be a part of Obama's negotiations with the Republicans.

    5)  Obama's offer of the chained CPI is a very real cut to a program that has done more to prevent poverty in the elderly than any other program.  It is bad policy to make cuts in it that will increase poverty among the elderly.

    6)  Obama's offer of the chained CPI is also very bad politics because any cuts to Social Security, whether they go through or not are now attached to the Democrats.  The Republicans will preach to the public that the Democrats, led by the President, are the party that wants to cut Social Security.  It will be hung around the necks of every Democrat in 2014 and in future elections.  Obama is systematically destroying the foundation of the Democratic Party and playing politics with the financial security of the elderly, veterans, and the poor.  Nice legacy.
