    If you look at the early Church (regular gatherings to share meals, "holding all things in common", designating members to determine the needs of the less fortunate, etc.), it has an almost Marxist feel. It could be argued that the worst thing that happened was when Constantine co-opted Christianity; instead of being on the outside, it now became part of the ruling structure and that's when the corruption started. Sure, there was no more worry about getting thrown to the lions or crucified or the like...but it became less likely to challenge the status quo in order to keep its status, and thus it was "safe." Jesus never took the "safe" route.
