    taxes. I have read that a lot, I hope I am not just pushing a falsity.

    •  Many of the taxes that were not paid were (0+ / 0-)

      legally not paid. Just like the US tax code, there are numerous loopholes that one can take advantage of and since the great sport worldwide is to demand things of government but not want to pay taxes, they were as good as it as anyone.

      Add to this that many activities took place in the shadow economy and no taxes get paid there either.

      A functioning tax authority could have helped, but now it's too little too late.
