  •  I qualified for reduced fee lunches from 5th grade (6+ / 0-)

through high school.  Dad took advantage of the GI bill to earn up to 5 Associate Degrees (Comp Sci, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and not sure what else) while serving 22 years in the USAF.  Mom worked for H&R Block during tax season and used unemployment to finance her Associates and Bachelor's degrees.  She was 1 class short of a triple major (Comp Sci, mathematics, and Accounting) and graduated with a 3.4 in Comp Sci.  Mom was the first in her family to get a Bachelor's degree and that was in 1983, the year I graduated from high school.

In 1994, after having worked for a private business in historic preservation for 2.5 years, I had to go on food stamps to stretch what remaining dollars I had.  The 8&%#$%^ owner/boss still owes me at least 2 months worth of wages.  When I quit and applied for food stamps, he owed me around 6 months worth.  I used food stamps for 3-4 months until I was able to get steady work again.

I have also used unemployment insurance monies to help pay for my two Associate degrees.  After the first degree, I was snapped up by a multi-national.  I worked for 13 years before being laid off again.  I went back to school because I was told that I didn't have a clue how to program in .Net or Java, despite having been a computer programmer for 13 years (mainframe).  It took me nearly 2 years to get work again and that was as a contract employee.  I'm now in a permanent job and after 3 weeks are still happy with me.
