  •  Consider Abu Graib torture a symptom of it all (6+ / 0-)

leaking out from the enablers at the bottom who get infected and co-enabled to echo the same mindset that originates with the Sopranos wanna bes at the top...
the torturers were just a sign of the pervasive sickness that trickles down from above had ripened to allow corrupt ordinary people in the military to be more corrupt and feel free to do whatever they wanted in the service of the Oligarchy though they did not actually see the whole linkage ... so that is the true trickle down... the control freak psychopathy that is streaked through from top to bottom... usually subtly enough that people do not see what they have been becoming accustomed to... the systemic bullying and being either the bullied or the cogs in the delivery of the bullying.

    •  A lot of military folk are horrified about torture (4+ / 0-)

Maybe not for the reasons you would want them to be, but by ignoring the Geneva Convention, and torturing people, it gives a kind of permission to our enemies to torture our captured troops.

Even John McCain tried to campaign against torture of captives, he knew first hand.

There is lots of corruption, but as a vet, I urge you not to be too hasty to tar everyone with that ugly brush. Not everyone in the service is like that. And you might never know the number of people who got early outs to avoid having to contribute to this, who might have been separated honorably, but with poor fitreps and evals because they weren't "team players."

      So be gentle.

      •  no... only a small minority did it but why there (5+ / 0-)

and then? In the mix were the contractors lived with different rules with Corporate blessings, CIA and direct meddling from above led to the "concentration camp guard" factor in those underlings who either gravitated to positions where they would be given the green light to go overboard... or were defectives who would not otherwise have been free to act out their darker side.

So the small symptomatic leaks at the bottom are an expression of the expedient, corner cutting amorality at the top. And these enabled defectives should not taint the rest of the professional and decent people in the services and especially those who often went through hell and bore the brunt of the misguided policies and did it with dignity and resolve.. but that did not protect thousands from being harmed in so many ways and add to that the additional danger of the acts of a disturbed few trashing the Geneva convention endangering the many...

So for me, the Patriot act was an Amoral, cynical disaster perpetrated by an amoral corporatist clique in the 1% whose stain infects society in many subtle and not so subtle ways.. whether the more obvious like the militarized and increasingly out of control police or other more diffuse or seemingly less connected ways... the Zeitgeist of the fearful and angry made that way by the selfish at the top whose formula for success leads those at the bottom into blighting themselves and society in many ways... made powerless and groomed to focus their undefined angst onto convenient targets.
