I remember after 9/11 hearing story after story from people who were convinced that the reason they (or their child, or grandchild, or cousin, or spouse, or whoever) overslept (or were held up in traffic or ran an early errand or had an early medical appointment or whatever) and missed being in the towers when the planes hit was because God "was with" that person.

I cannot tell you how many people have told me that sort of thing, sure that I'd agree with them because they know me to be a Christian, and I tell each and every one of them they're full of shit, like God was not with the other people who got to work on time and perished.

Thinking of moments like that, I understand very clearly why you speak of a self-congratulatory mindset amongst the religious.

"The Road Less Traveled" in which he spewed similar drivel, thereby totally undermining the impression of enlightened common sense that he had created throughout most of the book itself.  The contrast still puzzles (and discourages) me.  It's like the philosophical idiocy of that type of religiosity is an infectious disease against which there is no sure innoculation.

And it made me press the "delete" button on the list of names of people I had been compiling to whom I was prepared to recommend it.
