  •  Emergency appropriations for budget,wars,disasters (7+ / 0-)

All these crises are manufactured by the Republicans so there is no way anyone let alone the Democrats will stand up and stop these "vitally needed bills" from  going through the Congress. At which point the Republicans have their ready-made conduit to pass all sorts of outrageous and unreported by the media laws and deals for the benefit of themselves and the rich. Want to keep people from suing Eli Lilly over a bad drug recall? Put a law forbidding it in a "vitally needed funding" bill. Same with environmental oversight exemptions for fracking companies , FDA restrictions on GMOs that go wrong, the ATF barred from asking gunshop owners for weapon inventories -- ANY fucking thing the Republicans want they stick in these bills and there you go, guaranteed passage. Truth be told this is a main reason they took us to war in Iraq and Afghanistan, to provide reasons for scads of  "emergency war appropriations bills" that nobody with an eye on a political future would oppose or block, thus assuring a whole batch of shitty laws were passed. It's the reason for the debt limit ceiling stand-off, the sequester, any of these obviously destructive actions against the US government -- the Republicans provoke or exacerbate a simple problem into a monumental gridlock, then everybody panics and rushes through a bill that MUST pass. Thus the Repubs get their free ride on anything they want to be a law (Heaven forbid the Dems use this to pass, oh I don't know, strict gun control or a ban on gerrymandering).
This is so obvious it's invisible --"hide in plain sight" -- but it's a Republican strategy that apparently everybody is ok with. Look back  inside all the emergency funding bills from the past 13 years and you  will find all kinds of nasty stuff that was tucked away in them. (And let's not forget the "patriotic duty obligation" that brought us the horrors of the Patriot Act.).
