    You should not get a virus if you click on the wrong e-mail or website.  When  e-mail and the WWW first started, that was not true.  But now they both download executable code in the background without telling you.  If you know what you are doing you can turn a lot of that off, at the cost of some function.  But that should not be necessary.  The default should be no executable code coming from e-mail or web sites, unless you specifically authorize it on a case by case basis, perhaps with the option for a white list.  Some people would complain, but better some people complaining then large numbers of bot nets and other malware.
